The Roster of the Rough Riders, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry
- Plaque unveiled in 1907. I discovered this while visiting
Prescott, AZ in 2001. I believe this Pennington is Elijah Pennington
who served with the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders) during the
Spanish American War.

Daniel Wharley, London woolen draper and merchant, was not a passenger
on the Welcome. He carried on an
extensive trade with the West Indies, and had married Mary Penington,
half-sister of William Penn's first wife.
PMHB, XXI (1897), 11n: Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd Series, XIX, 730. The
mill he sent was probably that set up in
Chester Co. by Richard Townsend, and which Caleb Pusey operated. See
Smith, Delaware County, 147. RICHARD
TOWNSEND, carpenter of London and F.P. of 250 acres, with his wife Ann
and daughter Hannah, were passengers, although they shipped no dutiable
goods. He came in as a salaried employee of the Free Society of Traders,
and
brought with him three indentured servants of his own: WILLIAM SMITH,
NATHANIEL HARRISON, and
BARTHOLOMEW GREEN, each to serve him seven years. PMHB, VIII 339.

Daniel Wharley, woolen draper of London, married Mary Pennington, "ye
younger," of the Woodside, Parish of Agmondsham, Buckinhamshire. She was a
F.P. of 1250 acres, but neither of them ever came to Pennsylvania, and
Wharley bought no land in his own right until 1695 when he purchased 3OOO
acres from Penn "between Delaware and Swquehanna." Pennsylvania Archive"

Warrants for survey were issued for John Pennington & Co. 8 and 13 7m
1683. John Pennington (1655-1710), eldest son of Isaac and Mary
Pennington, and step-brother of Penn's first wife Gulielma Maria
Springett, was a F.P. of 1250 acres, but did not emigrate. Since he was of
Buckinghamshire, the John Pennington who shipped goods on the Friendship,
may have been another of the same name. Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series
II, 767; PMHB, LXX (1946), 358.

In addition to the properties shown above in the rights of John West
and Benjamin East, the Norris papers contain the original of another
warrant, dated 5 8ber 1701, from William Penn to Daniel Street, granting
him 500 acres in right of John West, purchaser of 1250 acres, "who in his
last will and testament devised same to his grandchildren, the children of
Hannah his daughter, present wife of Daniel Street. ...These caused to be
surveyed to the said Daniel Street. To Edward Pennington, surveyor."
