Bobby Pennington Indexing Project (BPIP)

The PRA lost one of its' greatest researchers and supporters on June 12, 2002 when Bobby Pennington passed away.  In recognition of all the amazing work Bobby did for the PRA, the Board of Directors renamed this project on July 24, 2002.

The program will now be called the Bobby Pennington Index Project.

Bobby Pennington created this project and wrote the program for the Pennington Research Association.  Not only did he write the program, but he also built the database by scanning every page from most of the Pennington Pedigrees and all of the Pennington Cousins’ Courier.  Then he indexed every name on every page!  What a challenge and what an effort.  He continued this historic effort until the time of his death.

The result of Bobby’s work and dedication is this outstanding program and database.  Every name in almost every issue ever published of the Pennington Pedigrees and all of the Pennington Cousins’ Courier can be found!

We owe so much to Bobby Pennington for all of his thousands of hours of work on behalf of the Pennington Research Association.

Bobby Pennington worked on this project for the past several years and has devoted hundreds of hours to this significant project. He was very close to completing the work on the Pennington Pedigrees when he became ill last year. We are exploring a way to place this information on our new web site and/or on a CD.

The Goals of the BPIP are:

  • Scan the remaining Pedigrees issues from where Bobby left off through 2004
  • Create indexes for each of those new scanned issues
  • Update the BPIP index database through 2004
  • Update the BPIP program software and install instructions and explore the option of converting the database to MS Access and build other search capabilities using MS Access rather than dBase version 5.0 that BPIP now uses.
  • Convert all MS Word files of the Pedigrees and Couriers through 2004 to Adobe Acrobat format (pdf)
  • Create a CD which will contain the BPIP program, installation instructions and Adobe Acrobat format (pdf) copies of all of the Pedigrees and Couriers through 2004
  • Place the BPIP program, installation instructions and Adobe Acrobat format (pdf) copies of all of the Pedigrees and Couriers through 2004 on the PRA's members only website.

BPIP Back on Track!

On May 12, 2005, Guye Pennington was appointed as the new ARD (Assistant Research Director) responsible for the BPIP.  Guye has set several goals for the BPIP and we are looking forward to this very important project getting back on track and the eventual release of a new CD with the information available to researchers and PRA members.

Guye Pennington has set his goals for the BPIP which are consistent with the Board’s goals.  It should be noted that Guye Pennington is no longer the ARD responsible for the BPIP.  This important project needs a volunteer to step forward and manage this very important project.  If you're interested, please contact Gene Pennington, Research Director.

  • To create a CD-ROM that is searchable.
  • The CD-ROM will have all the back issues of Pennington Pedigrees and Pennington Cousins Couriers on it.
  • Convert the current platform for the project to a combination of Microsoft Word, Access, and Adobe Acrobat Reader for the various storage and retrieval issues.

In 2002 the Board approved more research on publishing a CD that can be sold to PRA Members.  In July 2006, the Board approved the final details of the project and Volume I of the new project has been published and mailed to PRA Members.  The new project is titled "Pennington Periodicals".  Volume I contains the first ten (10) years of the Pennington Pedigrees, the Cousins' Couriers and the special research report by Jeffrey Lynn Haines, CG, the Board hired in 2006.

Volume I of the Pennington Periodicals is now available.  Click here to purchase it.

If you have any comments or suggestions on this project, please contact Gene Pennington, Research Director.

Pennington Cousins' Courier

The Cousins’ Courier was first published in July 1971 and has been published twice per year up through August 1999. There was only one issue in 1971. The cumulative index now being sold includes all issues from 1971 through 1999.  All issues have been scanned, indexed, and merged into the Cousins' Courier database.

In 1999, the Executive Board approved the combining of the Pennington Pedigrees and the Cousins' Courier into one publication.  The new publication is called the Pennington Pedigrees and is published 3 times a year.
