Pennington Research Association Standards for Family Group Names

The Pennington Research Association has used a formula for naming and renaming of Family Groups for a number of years.  The Executive Board approved a standard written by Ayvonne Roach when she was the Research Director in 1996 - 1997.  The approved standard was approved by the Board in July, 1997.

The formula established the standards for the future naming and renaming of groups using each group's oldest known ancestor, whether English or American, along with their date of birth and place first found.

The standards are:

If an established group carries a new name, the words "formerly known as ____" could follow the name for a brief period and then be dropped.

Further, should a group forfeit its name in the combination process, that group's number could be left on the list and "assigned to Group ____" placed by the group number for a brief period and then dropped.

In 1999 this standard was enhanced to help clarify some of the questions arising from current research.

  1. When a Family Group is deleted, the Research Director will use the Family Group name but will add the word "deleted".

  2. When a Family Group is combined with another Group, the Research Director will add the word "Subsumed" and the name of the new Family Group in the time and location column for the “subsumed” group.

  3. When a Family Group is deleted, the Research Director will use the old family group name for 1 year.  Then leave ALL FIELDS BLANK except for Research Director's worksheet which tracks history of group changes, etc.
