Notes for JOHN FRANKLYN PENNINGTON:

1846 - The June edition of the Post Office London directory, 1846, has John Franklyn listed: "Pennington, John F & Co., ostrich feather mers. 9 Walbrook."

1846: John and Sarah were married in the September Quarter, Vol II, page 234, in W. London.  John was living at St. Stephen, Walbrook. They were married at the Parish Church, in the parish of St Andrew, Holborn, London, in the county of Middlesex.  Witnesses were William Borell Burrows and Mary Anne Bristow (Sarah's sister).  They were married by Henry Milne M.A. Curate.

1851 Census:  Greenwich - John Franklyn (38) is living at 194 Stockwell Street, Greenwich.  He is listed as an Agent of Juvenile and Baby Linen: Warehouseman and noted as being born in Kennington, Surrey. This raises all sorts of questions about his ostrich feather business?  In all future documents there is no mention of this agency. Sarah (27)  is also listed as Theresa on the census.  Emily is 3 years old and Franklyn is one year old.  Also at the address is Martha Bookman (23 years) servant and assistant in shop, born in Monmouthshire, Chapman; Matilda Boyle (15 years) apprentice, born Middlesex, London; Jane Glynn (19 years), servant/nursemaid born in Leeds, Yorkshire.

1881: Found John Franklyn in 1881 census - name misspelled as BUNINGTON!.  He is 68 years old and listed as an ostrich feather merchant. He is living at 42 Highbury North Park, Islington - the place where he died in 1883.  With him are Sarah (56), Ellen (27), Clara (26), Amy (19), plus Ellen Holmes (27) servant/cook born in Aberdeen, Soctland, and Lavinia Pritchett (19) servant/housemaid born in Greenwich.  The premises of 9 Walbrook are listed as UNINHABITED.  In 1851 the premises had been occupied by another family (John and Elizabeth Cheek).

1883 May 3 - death certificate:  John's son Franklyn was present at his death bed.  John was 70 years when he died.

June 5 - from Wills Proved in the Pregorative Court of Canterbury 1883:

Personal estate of pounds sterling 22,111 19s 9d.  The will with a codicil of John Franklyn Pennington late of 62 Basinghall-street in the City of London and of 42 Highbury-New-park in the County of Middlesex Ostrich Feather Merchant who died 3 May 1883 at 42 Highbury-New-park was proved at the Principal Registry by Sarah Phoebe Theresa Pennington of 42 Highbury-New-park Widow the Relict (during widowhood) Franklyn Pennington of 60 Lordship-park Stoke-Newington in the said County Gentleman the Son and Henry John Worssam of 58 Oakley-road Southgate-road De Beauvor Town in the said County Gentleman the Executors.

7.  ARTHUR JOHN6 PENNINGTON (JOHN FRANKLYN5, HENEAGE OGLIVIE4, JOHN3, JOHN2, NICHOLAS1) was born November 24, 1864 in Hackney, London, England, and died August 14, 1952 in Wellington, New Zealand.  He married DORA EMMA WILDSMITH August 18, 1886 in Baptist Manse in Timaru, New Zealand, daughter of ARTHUR WILDSMITH and ABI AVISON.  She was born December 05, 1863 in Leeds, York, England, and died February 23, 1939 in Karori, Wellington, New Zealand.

Notes for ARTHUR JOHN PENNINGTON:

Arthur John died in the Public hospital in Wellington.

It appears Arthur ran away to sea at the age of 17 - which seems entirely plausible as he is nowhere to be found on the 1881 UK census records.  I have been unable to get exact data on his career at sea as the records for the Shaw Savill line (of which the Pleiades was a registered vessel) were destroyed during WWII.  However, the diary letter of Edwin Bold (see separate attached document) states that Arthur was a midshipman (or apprentice).

Dora Emma and Arthur met on board ship when Dora, Hillie, their parents Arthur and Abi, Abi's brother Andrew Avison and son Norman (and his wife Sarah Ann) came to New Zealand.  Dora fell in love with the name "Pennington" which she apparently saw on his sea chest (before she even met him - this seems entirely possible as there were only 12 passengers on the ship).  Ethel Marion now owns the sea chest and her daughter has the christening gown that he and his 14 brothers and sisters wore.

The ship was the Pleiades (1885), Captain Setton (spelt Setten in the Comber List, held by the Wellington Harbour Board, Maritime Museum)  in command. Departed London 24 June 1885 and arrived in Lyttelton 21 September 1885.  There are two notices about the vessel in the Lyttelton Times 22 September 1885.  One is from Shaw Savill asking that cargo be collected, the other a description of the voyage and noting that there were 12 passengers on board.  The best document on their voyage comes from Edwin Bold who was on his honeymoon with his bride Minnie (nee Avison).  Edwin wrote a diary/letter to his mother, the contents of which have been transcribed by myself in another document.

Dora and Arthur left for Australia in approx 1889. It must have been prior to April as Arthur John Franklin Pennington was born in NSW.  Arthur worked as a warden in a jail in Australia.  Dora couldn't take the heat so they moved back to NZ (possibly in 1902 for Dora and 1903 for Arthur).

1903 - NZ Electoral Roll has Arthur and Dora living in Usk Street, Oamaru, South island, NZ. The NZ Electoral Roll says he is a labourer, but the Wise NZ PO has him listed as a carter.

More About ARTHUR JOHN PENNINGTON:

Christening: March 30, 1865, Holborn, St Andrew, London, England

Occupation: 1881, Merchant Marine (ran away to sea)

Notes for DORA EMMA WILDSMITH:

The census of 1881 notes that Dora Emma was living with John and Annie Maynard.  She is listed as the sister-in-law and her occupation is dressmaker.  As a sister-in-law wouldn't that make Annie her sister?  Annie is listed as 30 and Dora's mother is only 43 at this time so it seems unlikely they are sisters.  Maybe the concept of sister-in-law was broader in those days?  Perhaps Annie was adopted?  This needs to be investigated further.  Or perhaps the adopted one is John Maynard?  Like Dora he was also born in Leeds.  John Maynard is listed as a master plumber.

1902 - Dora is listed in the Wise NZ PO directory as living in Nen Street, Oamaru, NZ.  Arthur is not mentioned.  He later appears in the directory and the electoral roll in 1903.  He must have had to sort out things in Australia before he returned.

1903 - Dora and Arthur are now living in Usk street, Oamaru.  Dora is listed as a dressmaker.
