FIRST GENERATION
1.
Joseph Pennington was born about 1770 in
Ireland. He
died about 1840 in Monroe Co., IN. He was
buried in Monroe Co., IN, Wright Cem.. Data on
descendants of Joseph Pennington from Pennington
Pedigrees 6-1, pg 52 and Pennington Pedigrees
15-1, pg 67-74.
Joseph came to America soon after his
nephew, Dr. Isaac Pennington came here.
JOSEPH PENNINGTON b. ca 1770;
mar. 1790; d. 1840 Monroe Co., IN; came from
Ireland with his wife, Grace MARTINDALE
(1775-1836); bought land and lived a few years in
Patrick County, VA; moved to a home site on Ranch
Creek, Pilot Mt., Surry Co., NC. He farmed and was
a miller. In 1825 he sold their farm home and
livestock, and with several other families
migrated by wagon train over a long, rough road to
Indiana. They settled in Lawrence County; then in
Greene County and went on to Monroe County, where
his estate settlement is filed.
They were buried in Wright
Cemetery, located on the Joseph Pennington land
located near the Lawrence County line. The
cemetery was destroyed by vandals several years
ago.

50-60 and age of female, 45-50. Wife: Grace
Martindale, b. England.

Joseph Pennington purchased 257 A: 100 (Lbs) of
land on Elk Creek, joining Isaac Pennington and
Daniel Martindale and Jonathan Hanbys. The tract
of land purchased from Susannah Marr. (Copy of
original deed in possession of Iris D. Collins.)

Richard Davidson paid the amount of 100 pounds.
(branches of Elk Creek - bounded, etc.) between

Pennington on file in Monroe Co., IN. Guardian
appointed for 16 year old son, Isaac b. 9 May -
Joseph Pennington, Jr. appointed guardian. A
grocery bill paid in "Fairfax" Monroe
Co.--Jan. 12, 1839...credit by a bushel beans -
$1.50 Etc. 1840 - paid for coffin, a coffin made
with open lid. Several pages - listing each item
and purchaser - it seems that they were close
family members at the sale.
Joseph Pennington did walk
the earth - from high mountains to level
farmlands, leaving many descendants.
