Introduction

The information which appears here was produced from the data contained in the John French Master File (JFMF).  Please remember that much of the information came from other Pennington researchers and depending on the researcher's knowledge, expertise and sources, may be in error.  At times, John French, who had researched the Pennington family for over twenty-five years made decisions about what he entered based on his own opinion.

FIRST GENERATION

1.  William Pennington was born about 1523 in Henham, Essex, England.  He was buried on November 11, 1592 in St. Benet's Gracechurch St..  Pennington Pedigrees 9-2, pg 5-6 indicates birth c. 1514.

He was married to Alice Woodcock.   Alice Woodcock was buried on October 9, 1607 in St. Benet's Gracechurch St..  William Pennington and Alice Woodcock had the following children:

              2              i.    Jacob Pennington. 

            +3             ii.    Robert Pennington (born about 1550).

              4            iii.    Arthur Pennington. 

              5           iv.    William Pennington. 

              6            v.    Thomas Pennington. 

              7           vi.    Mary Pennington. 

              8          vii.    Anne Pennington. 

SECOND GENERATION

3.  Robert Pennington was born about 1550.  He died on April 18, 1628 in London, England.  He was buried in Church of St. Andrew under Shaft.  Robert was a fishmonger, the second son of William.  

From Pennington Pedigrees 9-2, pg 5-6:

Robert, citizen and grocer of London; m. Alice Shetterden.

He was married to Alice\Judith Shetterden (daughter of Isaac Shetterden) about 1584.   Alice\Judith Shetterden was born about 1565 in West Cheap, St. Peter, London, England.  She died after 1622.  Additional information from Pennington Pedigrees 9-2, pg 5-6.

Robert Pennington and Alice\Judith Shetterden had the following children:

            +9              i.    Judith Pennington (born about 1585).

          +10             ii.    Sir Isaac Pennington (born in 1587).

          +11            iii.    Daniel Pennington (born about 1589).

          +12           iv.    Robert Pennington (born about 1591).

          +13            v.    Mary Pennington (born about 1593).

THIRD GENERATION

9.  Judith Pennington was born about 1585 in London, England.

She was married to \\ Claxton.

10.  Sir Isaac Pennington was born in 1587 in London, England.  He died on December 17, 1661 in Tower of London, England.  Isaac, of London, a merchant, ca 40 years, at his father's death, 1627, knighted by the Speaker of the House of Commons, and in 1649 was made a member of the Council of State, succeeded to all his father's lands and tenements in Suffolk and Norfolk, High Sheriff of London, 1638, M.P. for the City in 1640-1, and lord mayor in 1643, lieutenant of the tower and one of the commissioners of the High Court of Justice for the trial of King Charles I, but he did not sign the warrant for his execution; he was betrayed by King Charles II, and committed to the Tower of London in 166O, and his estates confiscated. He was sentenced to death, and died in the Tower, from the effects of ill-usage, 17 Dec 1661, before his sentence was put into execution.

He was married to Abigail Allen (daughter of John Allen) on February 7, 1614/15.   Sir Isaac Pennington and Abigail Allen had the following children:

            14              i.    Arthur Pennington was born on August 12, 1621 in London, England. (1)  Arthur became a Roman Catholic Priest.

            15             ii.    William Pennington was born in 1622.  He died in 1689.  William was a London druggist.

          +16            iii.    Daniel Pennington (born in 1630).

          +17           iv.    Isaac Pennington Jr. (born in 1616).

            18            v.    Abigail Pennington. 

            19           vi.    Bridget Pennington. 

          +20          vii.    Judith Pennington.

He was married to Mary Young (daughter of Matthew Young).

11.  Daniel Pennington was born about 1589 in London, England.  He died in 1665.

He was married to Elizabeth Risby.

12.  Robert Pennington was born about 1591 in London, England.  He died in 1664.

He was married to Anne \\.

13.  Mary Pennington was born about 1593 in London, England.

She was married to Robert Robinson.

FOURTH GENERATION

16.  Daniel Pennington was born in 1630 in London, England. (2)

He was married to Elizabeth Rigsby.

17.  Isaac Pennington Jr. was born in 1616 in England.  He died on August 8, 1679 in Goodneston, Kent, England.  He was buried in Jordans, Buckhamshire, England.

He was married to Mary Proude (daughter of Sir John Proude and Anne Fagge) on May 13, 1654 in St. Margaret's Westminister, London, England.   Mary Proude died on July 18, 1687 in Woodside, Amersham.  Isaac Pennington Jr. and Mary Proude had the following children:

          +21              i.    Gulielma Maria Springett.

            22             ii.    John Pennington was born on October 2, 1655 in Datchet, Buckingham Co., England. (3)  He died on March 8, 1710.  He was buried in Jordans, Buckhamshire, England.  John was never married.  Will dated 05-31-1708, probated 06-02-1710.

          +23            iii.    Mary Pennington (born on December 10, 1657).

            24           iv.    Ned Pennington (4) was born in 1661 in Amersham, Buckingham Co., England.

            25            v.    Isaac Pennington was born in 1663. (5)  He died in 1670.  Isaac drowned at sea in 1670.

          +26           vi.    William Pennington (born on June 3, 1665).

          +27          vii.    Edward Pennington (born on July 3, 1667).

20.  Judith Pennington died about 1710.  Judith was mentioned in the 1708 will of John Pennington, son of Isaac Pennington, Jr., as his aunt.

She was married to Molineaux.

FIFTH GENERATION

21.  Gulielma Maria Springett.  Stepdaughter of Isaac Pennington Jr.

She was married to William Penn (son of Vice Admiral Sir William Penn and Margaret Jasper) in 1692 in England.   William Penn (6) was born on October 14, 1664 in London, England.  He died on July 30, 1718 in Ruscombe, Berkshier, England.  Founder of Pennsylvania.

23.  Mary Pennington was born on December 10, 1657.  Additional information from Pennington Pedigrees 18-1, pg 7-8.

She was married to Daniel Wharley on September 4, 1686.   Mary Pennington and Daniel Wharley had the following children:

            28              i.    Daniel Wharley. 

            29             ii.    Isaac Wharley. 

            30            iii.    Henry Wharley. 

            31           iv.    Edward Wharley. 

26.  William Pennington was born on June 3, 1665 in Chalfont, Buckingham Co., England. (7)  He died before 1723.

William Pennington had the following children:

          +32              i.    Mary Pennington.

27.  Edward Pennington was born on July 3, 1667 in Chalfont, Buckingham Co., England. (8)  He died on November 11, 1701/2 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.  Edward Pennington immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1699.  Lineage from Pennington Pedigrees 5-2, pg 76-81.

He was married to Sarah Jennings (daughter of Samuel Jennings) on November 16, 1699 in Burlington Friends, Burlington, NJ.   Edward Pennington and Sarah Jennings had the following children:

          +33              i.    Isaac Pennington (born on November 22, 1700).

SIXTH GENERATION

32.  Mary Pennington. 

She was married to Thomas Pixley.

33.  Isaac Pennington was born on November 22, 1700 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.  He died on July 5, 1742 in Bucks County, PA.  The Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607-1776 14 November 1723.  Chancery Bill by Thomas Pixley of Southwark, Surrey, Daniel Wharley, citizen and glover of London, and Isaac Pennington of Pennsylvania, merchant, v. Joseph Wyeth and others re the descent of the estate of John Pennington of Buckinghamshire, gent, who died testate but without issue in 1710. The plaintiff Isaac Pennington was the son of Edward Pennington of West New Jersey, a brother of the testator. (NGSQ 65/143-144).

He was married to Ann Biles (daughter of William Biles II and \\ Langhorne) on November 5, 1725.   Ann Biles was born on February 4, 1702/3.  She died on February 22, 1748/49.  Isaac Pennington and Ann Biles had the following children:

          +34              i.    Edward Pennington (born on December 4, 1726).

          +35             ii.    Mary Pennington (born on June 5, 1732).

          +36            iii.    Sarah Pennington (born on June 10, 1734).

            37           iv.    Thomas Pennington was born on April 1, 1738.  He died on January 4, 1739/40.  

SEVENTH GENERATION

34.  Edward Pennington was born on December 4, 1726 in Bucks County, PA.  He died on September 30, 1796 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.

He was married to Sarah Shoemaker (daughter of Benjamin Shoemaker and Sarah Coates) on November 26, 1754.   Sarah Shoemaker was born on April 3, 1729.  She died on November 3, 1797.  Edward Pennington and Sarah Shoemaker had the following children:

            38              i.    Isaac Pennington was born on October 30, 1756.  He died on April 28, 1802.

            39             ii.    Anne Pennington.  Died in infancy.

          +40            iii.    Anne Pennington (born on April 28, 1760).

            41           iv.    Sarah Pennington.  Died in infancy.

            42            v.    Mary Pennington.  Died in infancy.

            43           vi.    Benjamin Pennington. 

          +44          vii.    Edward Pennington (born on May 8, 1766).

            45         viii.    Sarah Pennington.  Died in infancy.

            46            ix.    John Pennington was born on September 29, 1768.  He died on September 20, 1797.

          +47             x.    Mary Pennington (born on March 17, 1771).

35.  Mary Pennington was born on June 5, 1732.

She was married to Isaac Smith in Trenton, NJ.

36.  Sarah Pennington was born on June 10, 1734.

She was married to \\ Beesonet.

EIGHTH GENERATION

40.  Anne Pennington was born on April 28, 1760.  She died in August 1791.

She was married to Robert Smock.

44.  Edward Pennington was born on May 8, 1766.  He died on March 16, 1834.  From Pennington Pedigrees 5-2, pg 76-81.

EDWARD PENINGTON (1766-1834)

Edward Penington, the only son of Edward and Sarah Shoemaker Pennington, who married and left issue, was born May 8, 1766. He was associated in business with his eldest brother, Isaac Penington, as already indicated. Like his ancestors, he was possessed of literary tastes and was the owner of a library comprising over 6,000 volumes. In 1834 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society.

From 1805 to 1823 he was a manager of the Pennsylvania Hospital. He married September 27, 1798, Helena Lawrence Holmes, and died March 16, 1834. His widow died January 28, 1852. They had six children, all sons as follows: John, Edward, William Le Conte, Lawrence, Henry, and George.

Very few descendants survive of this notable family of distinguished ancestors off spring of the doughty Old Mayor of London, the friend and follower of Cromwell. (See Penns and Penningtons)

He was married to Helena Lawrence Holmes on September 27, 1798.   Helena Lawrence Holmes died on January 28, 1852.  Edward Pennington and Helena Lawrence Holmes had the following children:

          +48              i.    John Pennington (born on August 1, 1799).

          +49             ii.    Edward Pennington (born on December 6, 1800).

          +50            iii.    William Le Conte Pennington (born on April 13, 1803).

            51           iv.    Lt. Lawrence Pennington U.S.N. was born on October 25, 1805.  He died on August 5, 1870.  LAWRENCE PENINGTON, SR. (1805-1870)

                                    Lawrence Penington, Sr., another brother, was born October 25, 1805, and died unmarried August 5, 1870. He was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy.

              52            v.    Henry Pennington was born on September 19, 1809.  He died on November 11, 1858.  HENRY PENINGTON (1809-1858)

                                    The fifth of the six brothers, Henry Penington, was born September 19, 1809, and died without issue November 11, 1858. He was admitted to the Philadelphia bar October 21, 1828, and published in 1847, en American edition of Holthouses' Law Dictionary.

            53           vi.    George Pennington was born on July 17, 1809.  He died on November 10, 1809.  The youngest of these six sons, George Penington, who was born July 17, 1809, died in infancy, November 10, 1809.

47.  Mary Pennington was born on March 17, 1771.  She died on December 24, 1819.

She was married to Benjamin Smith Barton M.D. (son of Thomas Barton Rev. and Ester Rittenhouse) in September 1797.   Benjamin Smith Barton M.D. was born on February 10, 1766.  He died on December 19, 1815.
