Samuel, Ashe Co., NC

The information which appears here was produced from the data contained in the John French Master File (JFMF). Please remember that much of the information came from other Pennington researchers and depending on the researcher's knowledge, expertise and sources, may be in error. At times, John French, who had researched the Pennington family for over twenty-five years made decisions about what he entered based on his own opinion.
FIRST GENERATION
1.
Samuel Pennington died in 1862. He was
born in Albemarie Co., VA. Family
information says that Samuel Pennington came from
England with two brothers. They were spoken of as
"bound boys". They were
bound to work for the family who befriended them. Samuel
first settled in Tennessee, later moving to North
Carolina. After
the death of Samuel's first wife, he went back to
Tennessee and remarried and the family in North
Carolina lost all track of him. Lineage of

In the 1880 census of Helton Twp., Ashe
County, NC, two of Samuel's sons, Stephen and C.
Harvey, and both say that their father was born in
VA.
He was married to Elizabeth
Anderson.
Elizabeth
Anderson died in 1846 in Grayson Co., VA. Samuel
Pennington and Elizabeth Anderson had the
following children:

SECOND GENERATION

Stephen Pennington was born on March 3,
1821 in Grassy Creek, Grayson Co., VA. He died on
March 18, 1890 in Ashe Co., NC. Lineage of
Stephen Pennington is described in: Pennington Pedigrees 1-1, pg
70; Pennington Pedigrees 2-2, pg 31; Pennington
Pedigrees 2-2, pg 32; Pennington Pedigrees 3-2, pg
44; Pennington Pedigrees 10-1, pg 40. All of
Stephen's children were born in Virginia but in
1858, Stephen moved his family into North
Carolina. He
had built a three or four room log cabin about
five or six miles distance, on Wallens Creek,
about a half mile north of Big Helton and less
than a mile from Sturgills, Ashe Co., NC. Wallens
was the name of the early settlers who had lived
on the headwaters of the creek in the early 1700s. Both
Stephen and Johannah as well as their daughters
were charter members of the New Helton Methodist
Church, organized in 1885, and built in 1886. This
church is south of Sturgills.
He was married to Johannah
Spencer about 1842.
Johannah
Spencer was born on November 30, 1820 in
Grassy Creek, Grayson Co., VA. She died
on December 28, 1911 in Ashe Co., NC. Stephen
Pennington and Johannah Spencer had the following
children:

Celie\Celah Pennington was born on May 20,
1828 in Grassy Creek, Grayson Co., VA. Birth
dates of Calie and John may be questioned. Calie and
John lived on the Big Helton just north of
Sturgills. Lineage
of Celie Pennington is described in: Pennington
Pedigrees 2-2, pg 36-37.
She was married to John
Weaver about 1849.
John
Weaver was born on November 21, 1799. Celie\Celah
Pennington and John Weaver had the following
children:

Wiley Monroe Weaver was born on March 5,
1850. He
died on January 9, 1936 in CA.

23, 1852).

Claiborne Harvey Pennington was born on
November 2, 1830 in Grassy Creek, Grayson Co., VA. He died on March 21, 1915. Claiborne
married Charity Celena Perkins and had seven
children. They
lived in the vicinity of Sturgills in Ashe Co.,
NC. They
were charter members of the New Helton Methodist
Church. Lineage
of Claiborne Harvey Pennington is described in: Pennington
Pedigrees 2-2, pg 37-38.
He was married to Charity
Celena Perkins (daughter of
Philip Perkins and Anna Pritchard) about 1856.
Charity
Celena Perkins was born on July 3, 1834 in
Albemarie Co., VA.
She died on October 15, 1910. Claiborne
Harvey Pennington and Charity Celena Perkins had
the following children:

Elisha "Dock" Pennington was
born on July 21, 1832 in Grassy Creek, Grayson
Co., VA. He died on August 18, 1922. Family of
Elisha taken from 1850, 1860, and 1870 census
records of Ashe Co., NC listed in Pennington
Pedigrees 10-1, pg 41. Question on the name of third
child. The 1870 census shows a Leanzir,
age 5 and the 1870 census shows an Alice C., age
15. This
is probably the same child and we are showing the
name in these records as Alice C. !!!!!NOTE: There is
some confusion here about this Elisha. This
family is exactly the SAME FAMILY as in GROUP VII
of Elisha Pennington and Tabitha Jane Anderson. ALSO: The Patsy
Anderson shown in the 1870 census, is probably the
mother of Tabitha J. The first
wife, Jane, and the second wife, Tabitha J. are
probably the same person. I find it
rather odd that Elisha's mother-in-law of his
first marriage would be living with him some 20
years after his first wife died. !!!!ANOTHER
strange thing.
This Elisha's parents are shown as Samuel
Pennington and ELIZABETH ANDERSON. The Elisha
Pennington in GROUP VII show parents are Levi
Pennington and ELIZABETH ANDERSON.
He was married to Jane
Anderson on January 25, 1859 in Ashe Co., NC.2
Jane
Anderson was born about 1839. Elisha
"Dock" Pennington and Jane Anderson had
the following children:

He was married to Tabitha J.
\\ about 1862 in NC.
Tabitha
J. \\ was born about 1845. Elisha
"Dock" Pennington and Tabitha J. \\ had
