RICHARD PENNINGTON MEMORIAL MONUMENT DEDICATION (PRA Group IV)

A new memorial monument was dedicated in honor of Richard Pennington, by descendants, families, friends, and guests, at Bethlehem Cemetery, 2015 E. Bethlehem Road, Doyle, White County, Tennessee on Saturday, September 3, 2005 during the 83 degree, sunny day. About sixty people were present and took part in the 11:00 a.m. reading, prayer, and response of the dedication. Since he died in 1813, Richard did not have a readable grave marker. The Gravestone was engraved:

Chairmen Nell Beck Truitt and her husband, John, greeted cousins on Friday evening at the Best Western Thunderbird in Cookeville, TN, assisted by Susan Yeager Kiser of Kentucky and her sister Kathy Yeager Laymon of Tennessee. Michelle Barlow Price and Carolyn Rankin Compton and families, also of Tennessee, were hosts at the evening meal at Patrick’s Restaurant. They are descendants of Daniel Boone Pennington, son of Richard. Dr. Josephine Barnes, of Iowa, presented an overview of her genealogical research after dinner. Cousins exchanged genealogy, family stories and legends, and showed photos of ancestors. Dr. David Edison Pennington II and family joined the group when they arrived from Indiana.

Saturday morning the dedication began with a welcome by Carolyn Compton, 4th great-granddaughter of Richard Pennington, followed by posting of the colors by Tennessee Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard James J. Thweatt, Trustee, John C. Glynn, Jr., and William F. Eubanks. James read a tribute to Richard Pennington, who served during 1781-82 at Capt. Enoch Osborne’s Fort, Montgomery County, VA. Everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, led by Margaret “Maggi” Sproat Hoover of Illinois, also a 4th great-granddaughter. Michael Hoover was one of the official photographers, and Sam Compton filmed a video. Maggi is a descendant of John Stewart Pennington, son of Richard.

Troy L. Pennington and his wife LaWanda, of Grapeland, Texas, introduced descendants and guests, including members of six DAR chapters; SAR members present; Barbara Wilson, White County, TN Library Assistant; and Josephine Hollingsworth, the current owner of the Joshua Pennington farm. Tina Clovis and her family were also present. She has two children, Boone Pennington and Sophia Maria Pennington by her deceased husband, Jo Mac Pennington. Troy L. Pennington descends from Joshua, son of Richard.

This was followed by the unveiling of the monument by the planning committee members. The address was given by Joyce Nell Beck Truitt, a 4th great granddaughter, DAR member and Secretary of the Boone Society, Inc. Nell descends from Daniel Boone Pennington, son of Richard.

Everyone present sang “Amazing Grace,” and then participated in Honor and Memory, led by Judy Callaway Ostler and her sister, Ramona Callaway Koehl, of Texas, both members of Daughters of the American Revolution. They are descendants of Joshua Pennington, son of Richard.

Reverend Dr. Josephine Barnes, a 6th generation descendant, read scripture and gave prayer of dedication. She asked all to form a circle of love as they remembered the sacrifices and patriotism of their ancestor, Richard Pennington, and his wife, Hannah Boone-Stewart (the youngest sister of Daniel Boone) and their four children, Joshua, Daniel Boone, John Stewart, and Abigail. Josephine descends from John Stewart Pennington, son of Richard.

The descendants from six states then poured soil around the gravestone, which they brought from their home state, as well as soil from the burial place of Hannah Boone-Stewart Pennington, indicating the many descendants and families living throughout the United States of America.

Following a viewing and tour of the old c1820 built barn of Joshua Pennington adjacent to the cemetery, where a log cabin is located inside the addition to the old barn, cousins had lunch at Smokin’ Ed’s Barbeque in Sparta, White County, Tennessee. Several of these cousins continued their genealogical research in nearby cities of Tennessee and Kentucky where ancestors had lived before returning home.
